The Three Golden Hairs

These costumes are designs for the Brothers Grimm’s The Three Golden Hairs. I set this production in 1550AD in Germany for a child audience. This era was considered the years of symbolism and fantasy as the Renaissance world revolved around emblems, iconography and allegories. People delighted in using these symbolic representations in dress. Almost any animal, plant, god, object, moon, colour, or foreign fashion could be used metaphorically to say something more than itself. At a time when most people could not read, visual meanings were especially important just as illustrations are essential in children’s literature. Using colour and texture I have created animalistic features within these costumes to create visual Germanic animal symbolism.
